Building strong communities is essential for fostering connection, engagement, and creating a sense of belonging.
When people feel connected to their surroundings and each other, it enhances their quality of life and creates a lasting impact. Strong communities provide safe spaces for social interaction, promote mental and physical well-being, and encourage intergenerational play. Traditionally, YMCAs, parks, schools, and libraries have played essential roles in community development. Still, many are reimagining how their outdoor spaces can enhance community well-being and expand access to recreation beyond their typical use.
Opening Spaces for Community Use’
Across the country and in your own back yard, organizations are coming together to transform existing spaces into vibrant community hubs. By reimagining and repurposing existing outdoor spaces, schools, libraries, YMCAs, and other organizations like The Trust for Public Land (TPL) are providing new opportunities for social connection, recreation, and wellness.
TPL’s Community Schoolyard Projects: A Model for Expanded Access
TPL has been partnering with communities and school administrators to open schoolyards to the public after school hours. Transforming existing, underutilized blacktops into vibrant community play spaces connecting students and neighbors alike to the benefits of the outdoors. A great and local example in Chattanooga is East Side Elementary, where a formally closed-off space will now serve as a welcoming community park, offering play areas, a soccer field, and much more that will benefit students and local families alike.
YMCA’s Connecting with Neighbors:
Like the impactful work being done at TPL, the Northwest YMCA in Nashville TN, has extended access to its outdoor facilities by creating a dynamic, intergenerational park packed with amenities for everyone. This vibrant community space features a state-of-the-art playground, a fitness zone, basketball and pickleball courts, a multipurpose field, a track, pavilions, a splash pad, and beautifully landscaped gardens.
These initiatives highlight how partnerships between organizations and local communities can maximize the impact of existing recreational areas, by revitalizing these spaces we can ensure that everyone has equal access to high-quality outdoor spaces.
